There is no other podcast quite like Superego, and I am utterly transparent about my fanaticism. With Season 3 just a hop, skip and a jump away (March 1), I asked Superego Clinic's Dr. Matt Gourley, PyT, about their Vanity Fair-style photo shoot and what new and returning listeners have to look forward to from him, Jeremy Carter, Mark McConville and Jeff Crocker.
The quality of everything Superego does ~ from the website to the embedded episode images to post-production ~ is an order of magnitude greater than most other comedy podcasts. TELL US ABOUT YOUR DECISION TO CREATE SUPEREGO WITH SUCH PHENOMENAL PRODUCTION VALUE.
Thank you! There's a popular aesthetic in internet comedy where the more you look like you didn't try, the cooler you are. That's not really us. I think we all agree that it's better to go for it and miss than do some ironic hipster-dickaround. (That term will be adopted by hipsters by noon tomorrow.)

When we record Superego, it's as rough as can be -- that helps with the spontaneity -- but, it's the post production where we lay in the love and affection. We look at it as a sort of portfolio, or body of work. Podcasting is just the media that delivers it, we try to make it its own thing, have as much fun as possible, and not think about what a podcast should be.
HOW DID THE "HIGH SOCIETY" PHOTO SHOOT HAPPEN?
We did a photo shoot for Season 2 and decided to do the same for Season 3. We use the shots for our web site, pictures that play during the podcast, and for occasional press. [Superego Clinic Resident Specialist] Jeff Crocker had the idea of the Vanity Fair piece, which we all immediately loved.
The way the look of it came about was a bit of a fortunate accident. We bought some custom-made doctor's smocks complete with fancy embroidery on the pocket. I took them to the dry cleaner and when I went to pick them up the night before the shoot, the cleaners had closed. I panicked and called in a favor from the CSULB costume shop. The head of the shop said "I'll meet you there in 20 minutes," and was a GD savior. I left with a carload of options, including the gentlemanly looking hunting outfits we used for that shoot. Eric Macklin, the photographer did a great job of catching that Annie Leibovitz look. Eventually they got to me and I studied up on those Vanity Fair "Hollywood" issues and laid in the fake copy.
HOW ARE PEOPLE FINDING OUT ABOUT SUPEREGO?
Word-of-mouth and Twitter, best we can figure.
That most of it's free, you can start at any episode, and it's made out of friendship.
WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO IN SEASON 3?
Also, the roster of guests we have recorded with already, or are slated to record with has been fantastic. Just some that we've already got segments with are Rob Delaney, Joe Randazzo, Tom Scharpling, and of course the beloved Paul F. Tompkins.
