The results of this survey surprised me. My anticipated Top 3 First Podcasts were Ricky Gervais, SModcast and Never Not Funny. While all 3 of these made the list, only one made the Top 3.
So, which podcasts gently but masterfully made more of us men & women than any others?

Never Not Funny (2006) & Doug Loves Movies (2006, formerly I Love Movies) are the top 2 ... which makes mutual producer Matt Belknap quite the procurer for our first-time encounters. Coming in at #3 is Jesse Thorn's public radio podcast The Sound of Young America (2004). Radio sweetheart, indeed.
In the subsequent contest, many people guessed that Adam Carolla's podcast would made the Top 3. While that show probably introduced many people in the general public to podcasting, most survey respondents had already started listening to podcasts by the time his 2009 show began. Also, I think my readership skews a little more "alt comedy" than does Carolla's listenership.
While not everyone who participated in the survey could remember when their ears went all the way with podcasting for the first time, here are the results from those who responded:
And, the winner of the contest? Matt B. (NOT Belknap)! He'll get to choose from 1) a limited edition 2011 SF Sketchfest poster, or 2) a for-pay past, current or upcoming season of the podcast of his choice.
And, thank you to EVERYONE who participated.
