Anatomy of a Podcast: Process (2)

 With SHAKEYTOWN RADIO-HOUR & SUPEREGO.

Anatomy of a Podcast takes you behind the download. The first part of the series focuses on the big-picture PROCESS: what it takes to get an episode online, from initial idea through publicizing.

Today's featured shows are The Shakeytown Radio-Hour and Superego.

THE SHAKEYTOWN RADIO-HOUR
"Either or both of the hosts (though usually Brodie) invite guests on the show.  Brodie pulls together research on the guest. The guest comes to Gene’s or Brodie’s house, or Brodie and Gene go to them.

Brodie and Gene prompt the guest on the format (hosts introduce themselves, conversation happens, hosts do their sign off and the guest is given the last word). The conversation is recorded. Brodie edits the podcast on GarageBand, adding music, a billboard, show info (our website, social media links, email, and phone number) and music credits that are recorded later.

Brodie uploads the finished edit to Podbean, then writes an episode description to go on the website, the AST thread, and the podcast feed. Brodie publishes the episode. Gene and Brodie promote the episode on AST, Twitter, and Facebook." ~ Gene George & Brodie Foster Hubbard

SUPEREGO
"We meet, pitch sketch ideas to each other, and write them on a white board. We usually start with something free-form, what we call ‘round-robin,’ where anyone can jump in with a joke or character in a non-linear way. Something like the Smithsonian sketch or Heartlines on the Shore 104.4.

After that we move into some more featured character stuff. We usually record each segment at least twice as long as it ends up being, so I can tighten it and choose the best bits.
The material sits on my computer until I have a chance to edit it. That can sometimes take a few hours per segment depending on how intricate it is. The easiest ones to edit are the non-linear sketches or something like FDR that’s just a solo rant.

After all of the individual segments are edited, I put together the final episode in GarageBand and upload it for good!

The morning of its release, we hit Twitter and FB with links. That’s about all we do, except for trying to correspond with listeners as much as possible that help spread the word. We love the word of mouth technique and try to thank people as much as possible for getting the message out." ~Matt Gourley
