Behind the Scenes with Long Shot, Superego & Never Not Funny

Let's hear it for the Rainbow Tour!

I just returned from an extremely enlightening LA weekend, during which 3 podcasts generously allowed me to sit in on tapings for book research. Here are some brief behind-the-scenes notes on their recording processes.

The Long Shot Podcast
WEBSITE

Recorded in a Hollywood-area apartment. Sound engineer Jorge Reyes brings in and sets up the professional equipment just before recording. Comedian Myq Kaplan joined The Long Shot Quartet (Sean Conroy, Jamie Flam, Amber Kenny & Eddie Pepitone) for bagels 'round the couch, and they briefly discussed some bullet points to hit before taping. Liz Brown tweets behind-the-scenes tidbits during taping.

LISTEN TO EPISODE #318

Guest Myq Kaplan also has a head-front. See it!

Superego
WEBSITE

Recorded in a Long Beach home with their own sound equipment setup around the living room. Matt Gourley, Jeremy Carter, Mark McConville and Jeff Crocker sweat over every detail with love. While I was there, they spent hours listening to existing sketches for the July episode, re-recording/re-editing some moments, discussing sequence, and recording credits, plugs, listener-feedback names, and ad spots. Also: beer, Mission Tortilla Rounds, bean dip and Grasshoppers. How do they remain so slim-hipped?

By far, the most labor-intensive of any comedy podcast I know of.

Jeremy won the tortilla sack race!

Never Not Funny

Recorded in a shared, dedicated space in Studio City. Eliot Hochberg and Dan Katz arrive before the show to set up, and Jimmy Pardo, Matt Belknap and the guest (whom Jimmy & Matt always prefer to keep a secret until release day) all arrive just before recording begins. The dashingly-attired Pardo keeps track of the time during the taping, and Hochburg edits the multi-camera video feed on the fly. Efficiently and professionally run, but it's as much fun to be there as it looks on the podcast.

Zoinks! The studio is h-h-haunted!
Next week's guest remains hidden in a spooky blur.
Also scary: Eliot's absence of shoes.
