Anatomy of a Podcast: Process (3)

With MUSTACHE RANGERS, THE GENTLEMEN'S CLUB & THE GREEN ROOM.

Anatomy of a Podcast takes you behind the download. The first part of the series focuses on the big-picture PROCESS: what it takes to get an episode online, from initial idea through publicizing.

Today's featured shows are Mustache Rangers, The Gentlemen's Club and The Green Room.

MUSTACHE RANGERS
"We record about 4 episodes at a time, hopefully with a week in between recording and publishing. I find it easier to edit an episode after I have some distance from the initial recording. Then I cut out the pauses and repetition to make things a little snappier. Play with the levels to make sure it isn’t too quiet or loud. Load it up to the FTP site. Schedule a Wordpress post for it. Bam, it’s up." ~ Aric McKeown & Corey Anderson
PUBLICITY: Facebook, Twitter, Earwolf ad. Word of mouth. We’ve started handing out podcast CD samplers at our live shows for people to listen to on the ride home and pass around.

THE GENTLEMEN'S CLUB
"The Gentlemen’s Club is a light-hearted one-on-one interview show so the first step is getting guests.  I used to do phone interviews and realized I hated them so I only do in person interviews.  I reach out to guests either directly, via a friend-of-a-friend, or a publicist.  Then I schedule them to come to my apartment, or I go to theirs, and one time I even recorded after-hours in my office.  Living in Hollywood seems convenient for a lot of people.

I’ll come up with interview questions or outline items to bring up on the show.  I usually know a good bit about my guests but I’ll always dig deeper.  With a lot of the porno girls I interview, I usually don’t know a ton about them (okay… some I know a lot about) so I’ll ask the publicist for more info and I’ll look up the titles of past performances… those titles are always a hoot.

The interview itself will take 40-70 minutes and we’ll usually hang for a little bit before and after.  I’ll also record a solo intro and outro, then copy all of those files from my Tascam Digital Recorder into my MacBook Pro and dump them into GarageBand.  I don’t edit much but I do add theme music and trim the audio if we took a bathroom break or, one time, a porn gal admitted to something illegal and I felt like cutting it because I didn’t want her to get in any trouble as it had to do with another party. " ~Caleb Bacon
PUBLICITY: Facebook, Twitter (two accounts), a few message board posts, and I’ll email friends if I think they may like the episode (though most of my friends get enough of me in real life.)  Sometimes I’ll use Reddit or StumbleUpon.  The guests also do a good job w/ cross promoting via their websites or social media.

THE GREEN ROOM
"The show is live every Thursday at 8pm [via LA Talk Radio]. So that gives me a hard deadline. During the week I will collect audio or write down things that will be good topics. Thursday during the day I go through all the clips and edit them together, then do any guest research if we’re having someone in that day. The show runs 8-9pm Thursday night, then I post the episode Friday morning." ~ Sean Green
PUBLICITY: Facebook, Twitter, press releases, online forums, iTunes, Tumblr
